High School Orchestra

Register your students online prior to midnight on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. Late enrollment (with fee increase) is due before Tuesday, October 31. New teachers—it is highly encouraged that you talk to your bookkeeper to make sure checks will be cut in time for this event (it has been an issue with some districts in the past). On-time registration fee is $7 per student; October 31 late registration fee is $14 per student; and on-site registration the day of auditions (November 4) is $25 per student.

Auditions for the NEKMEA High School Orchestra will be held on Saturday, November 4 at Olathe East High School (14545 127th Street, Olathe, KS 66062) beginning with student registration at 7:30 AM. We ask all teachers to meet at 7:00 AM to go over the audition process. Follow signs in the school to locate the Orchestra Audition Room.

Excerpts will be selected from the KMEA All-State Orchestra excerpts

Teachers will be expected to be a part of the audition process and are encouraged to attend the NEKMEA Fall Meeting on Tuesday, September 5, at Lawrence High School. Information for the meeting is on the Home page of this site.

PLEASE NOTE: Teachers MUST be a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) in order for their students to be registered!

Students can wear casual clothes and are encouraged to bring a music stand for the warm up room on audition day. There will be snacks available for purchase in the Olathe East Commons area. If chosen for the District Orchestra, students are expected to wear their school's concert uniform (black dress or tux).

Literature will be chosen soon and practice copies will be sent to directors in November. The NEKMEA High School Orchestra rehearsal/performance will be held on Saturday, December 2, at Olathe South High School.

KMEA Membership Requirement

The NEKMEA board voted to require membership in NAfME-KMEA in order to register students for NEKMEA honor groups. This is in line with the KMEA policy requiring membership in order to register students for KMEA All-State ensembles.

  1. Join NAfME. Indicate Kansas in your membership profile.
  2. Set up an account in the KMEA Members website. This creates a connection between your NAfME profile and KMEA's registration systems.
  3. After creating an account in the KMEA Members site, select your district affiliation so you may participate in elections.
  4. When registering students for NE district or All-State ensembles, your NAfME ID will be part of the registration.
  5. Do not wait until the deadline day to start this process!
